Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

EFT, also known as tapping, is a gentle yet powerful technique that helps release emotional tension and restore balance in the body. It combines light fingertip tapping on specific acupressure points with focused awareness of thoughts, feelings, or physical sensations.

EFT works with the body’s energy system, similar to acupuncture but without needles. By stimulating these points while tuning into your experience, you help calm the nervous system, reduce stress hormones, and gently rewire emotional patterns.

During a session, we work together to identify areas of emotional stress, limiting beliefs, or unresolved experiences. As you tap on key points, often on the face, chest, and hands, you may notice shifts in how you feel, think, or respond. It’s a simple process, but it can lead to deep emotional release and clarity.

This technique can support a wide range of concerns, from anxiety and overwhelm to physical discomfort and self-doubt. It’s especially helpful for moments when you feel stuck, reactive, or disconnected from your inner calm. EFT may help:

  • Release blocked energy and trapped emotions

  • Calm the amygdala (the brain’s fear centre) to ease fight‑or‑flight

  • Surface and gently shift unhelpful beliefs

  • Restore emotional balance and a sense of safety

Sessions can be held in person or remotely, and the effects are just as meaningful either way. Whether you're working through a specific issue or simply seeking more emotional ease, EFT offers a compassionate space to reconnect with yourself.

How Unhealed Experiences Shape Us

Trauma doesn’t only stem from dramatic events, it can

arise from:

  • Prolonged stress

  • Feelings of inadequacy

  • Unresolved experiences from childhood

  • Unmet emotional needs

  • Disconnection from self or others

  • Repeated boundary violations (even small ones)

  • Loss, grief, or sudden change

  • Living in survival mode for extended periods

  • Unpredictable or unsafe environments

  • Internalised shame or self-blame

  • Feeling responsible for others’ emotions or wellbeing

  • Chronic invalidation or being dismissed

  • Lack of secure attachment or emotional attunement

  • Being overly praised for performance, not for personhood

  • Experiencing love as conditional or transactional

  • Witnessing conflict or emotional volatility without resolution

  • Having to suppress emotions to maintain peace or safety

How Unhealed Experiences Can Show Up

These experiences don’t just live in the mind, they’re stored in the body, affecting our nervous system, stress responses, and overall wellbeing. Unprocessed emotions can manifest as:

  • Muscle tension or chronic pain

  • Persistent fatigue or burnout

  • Anxiety or hypervigilance

  • Physical discomfort without clear medical cause

  • Digestive issues or appetite changes

  • Sleep disturbances or nightmares

  • Emotional numbness or detachment

  • Overwhelm, shutdown, or dissociation

  • Difficulty trusting or connecting with others

  • Self-sabotage or harsh inner criticism

These wounds can shape how we respond to others, how we relate to ourselves, and how we move through life. The good news: healing is possible, through awareness, compassion, and intentional support.

I've found that EFT offers something rare: a way to meet yourself with honesty and compassion, even in the messy moments. It’s not about fixing or forcing,  it’s about gently making space for what’s been held inside, and letting your body remember what safety feels like.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is EFT therapy?

EFT can support emotional wellbeing, but it isn’t a substitute for medical or mental health care.

Is EFT safe if I feel anxious?

We proceed slowly and can pause anytime. If anything feels too much, we adjust or stop.

Can EFT bring up strong emotions?

Sometimes. Tapping can gently surface feelings that have been held in the body. We move slowly, and you’re always in charge. If anything feels too much, we pause, adjust, or stop.

Is EFT suitable if I’m neurodivergent or highly sensitive?

Yes. Sessions are shaped with care and attunement. We can adjust pace, language, and structure to support your nervous system and unique way of processing.

Do I need to say things out loud while tapping?

Not always. We can use silent tapping, gentle phrases, or imagery, whatever feels most comfortable. You’re welcome to speak, whisper, or stay quiet.

Can EFT be combined with other healing approaches? Yes. EFT blends beautifully with energy work, sound healing, or other modalities. We’ll shape the session intuitively based on what feels most supportive.

What if tapping feels silly?

That’s common at first. We go gently; most people find the rhythm calming after a few rounds.

Can I do EFT between sessions?

Yes. I’ll show you a short sequence you can use at home when you’d like support.

Session Rhythm & Aftercare

How many sessions might I need?

Every person is different. Some feel shifts after one session; others find that a short series, such as three, helps changes settle in gently. You’re welcome to go at your own pace, and we can revisit what feels supportive as we go.

Do I need to be in crisis to benefit from EFT?
Not at all. EFT is just as powerful as a preventative tool as it is for processing specific challenges. You don’t need to be in emotional distress to tap. In fact, regular tapping can help keep your nervous system regulated, your thoughts clearer, and your emotions more balanced. It’s a way of checking in with yourself, gently releasing tension before it builds, and staying connected to your inner calm.

Can EFT help during grief, change, or emotional overwhelm?
Yes. EFT can be a deeply supportive companion during times of transition, loss, or emotional intensity. It offers a safe space to acknowledge what you’re feeling, without needing to explain or fix it. By tapping through the waves of emotion, you can begin to soften the edges of pain, find moments of relief, and reconnect with your own resilience.

What might I feel after a session?
Everyone’s experience is unique, but common responses include a sense of lightness, emotional release, or deep calm. You might feel more grounded, clear-headed, or even pleasantly tired. Some people notice shifts in their thinking, a drop in anxiety, or a new perspective on something that felt stuck. Occasionally, emotions may surface or dreams may become more vivid, signs that your system is processing and integrating what’s been released.

Is there anything I should or shouldn’t do afterward?

It’s helpful to give yourself space. You might want to rest, drink water, journal, or spend time in nature. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, or intense stimulation if possible as your system may be adjusting, and gentle is best.

Can I reach out between sessions?

Yes. If anything feels unclear or you'd like support, you're welcome to get in touch.
